Removing unnecessary country maps from Navigon
NOTICE!
Due to some breach of the law use this tutorial on your behalf! You have been warned.
After buying Navigon, European version I noticed that it is over 1,8 GB. I have 16GB iPhone 3GS and about 12GB of music, some other programs and tons of photos. I also don’t need maps of the whole Europe at that moment. So I decided to cut out other countries than that I live in.
It is very easy (no terminal) although you need to have jailbrake and AppSync installed. Otherwise, the edited .ipa wouldn’t be uploaded to your device.
Firstly, REMEMBER TO BACKUP ORIGINAL APP as it will be probably overwritten by modded version. I think re-downloading 1,9GB is not very pleasant..
Now follow these steps:
1. Backup, backup, backup… (if you hadn’t)
2. Copy .ipa from iTunes – you can simply drag it to the desktop
3. Change file extension from .ipa to .zip
-select the file and use key shortcut COMMAND + I (or contextual menu Get info)
-in the field Name & Extension change the extension to .zip
Now press enter and click Use .zip
4. Now double-click the archive to unpack it. Be patient, it will take a while…
5. Open folder and go to Payload. CTRL+click on NAVIGON.app, select Show Package Contents
6. Delete unnecessary .map files.
7. Drag edited .app to iTunes Application section. It will be automatically converted to .ipa
8. Now you should have a lot smaller .ipa. In my case in less than 200mb
.
9. Sync with device.

Between steps 6 and 7: Is it necessary to rezip everything, and then rename the .zip to .ipa, before moving to itunes? You mention that it will convert automatically to .ipa, but since everything was zipped before you started the process, doesn’t it have to be re-zipped and then renamed?
Thanks!

No you don’t have to. Moreover, iTunes 9 would reject that .ipa. It must convert the .app to .ipa.

Thanks a lot! Worked great! No need for Zip software – excellent!
Though i lost the application icon (?), i am happy to have some room left, now, on my 8GB iPhone!
